Although it allegedly never rains in sunny California, storm clouds
filled with buckets of rain crashed down on all roads leading to
Glendale Community College's Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Banquet
on March 15, 2003.
I couldn't help but wonder if the spirit of my husband's father,
Frank C. Wykoff, was present; and that the rain was symbolic of
his presence.
Frank and his parents moved to Glendale when he was ten years old
(1919); most of his fame years happened while he lived in Glendale. His
photograph appeared in a Local Glendale newspaper topped with the
headline: "Glendale's Hero."
When he was just 18 years old, Frank Wykoff represented the U.S.A.
in the IX Olympiad held in Amsterdam, Holland. He won his gold
medal as a member of the 400 meter relay team -- soaked and muddied by
the cold rains in Amsterdam. How fitting that it was raining
today.
Stranger yet, when we parked our car, the rains stopped long enough
for us to find our way to shelter in the cafeteria where everyone was
gathering for the social hour.
