After Frank Wykoff was
officially inducted into the National Track
& Field Hall of fame on
August 14, 1977
-- a photograph was
taken of both Owens and Wykoff's hands
displaying their Hall of Fame rings.
Neither Wykoff nor Owens knew at that moment
in time that both had only three more years
on earth, and the race to the "pearly gates"
was one race neither wanted to be first at.
Frank Wykoff, refused to depart before he
could watch his Alma Mater Trojan football
team, University of Southern California
conquer Ohio State (Owens's Alma Mater) at
the Rose Bowl game on January 1, 1980.
After USC scored 17, and Ohio State 16 -- a
few hours later to the shock of his family,
Wykoff passed away; and Owens passed away in
March of the same year. |
