1936 -
2004 -- The Old Olympic Oak
tree stands tall on the grounds of Associates Park at the
University of Southern California.
History: During the 1936 Olympics at Berlin, all athletes who received a Gold
Medal, also received an English Oak Tree.
Ken
Carpenter (Discus), a student at U.
S. C., presented his Olympic Tree to the University; and
its' branches tower high into the sky with
glorious
majesty.
There is mystery surrounding
the 1936 Olympic trees, because only a few have been
found to exist in the U. S. A.
In the summer of 2002, the 1936
Relay team tree
(USA Olympic Relay Team: Frank Wykoff, Foy
Draper, Ralph Metcalfe, and Jesse Owens)
collapsed to the ground at the U. S. C. park; and there
are plans to rededicate the tree on Saturday, April 30,
2005 prior to the USC vs. UCLA track & field game.
On Saturday, 4-30-05 -- the Olympic Tree was re-dedicated.
