Parry O'Brien
revolutionized the sport of shot-put with his
"O'Brien Glide" technique. In 1952
O'Brien won an Olympic Gold Medal by distancing his
16-pound ball 17.41 m. In 1954, he "became
the first person to put the shot more than 60 feet.¹
" O'Brien participated in four Olympiads
(1952 - 1964), and placed first in the 1955 & 1959
Pan-Am Games. O'Brien was inducted into
the
USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1984.
